Melanie Jackson: Manicule #5
Melanie Jackson: Manicule #5
Melanie Jackson works with sculpture moving image and text. Recent work draws on explicit medieval images of dissent, satire, class resistance and bodily autonomy in what writer Ian Hunt calls “intoxicant flashbacks” to illuminate the present. In the ceramic works in the fundraiser she has been drawing parallels with kiln technologies and AI engines to conjure up transformations, hybridity, willing, unwilling commons and fiery excess as an extension of her exhibition Rouge Flambé at San Mei Gallery in 2023, showing in a new iteration in a solo exhibition in @exeterphoenixgallery in early 2025.

About the Artist
'Melanie Jackson has been developing an aesthetic that allows her to reflect on the manner in which she is implicated in the condition of her subjects…She tries out tactics of representation which remain provisional rather than definitive, treating the gallery as a stage for experimentation with art roles. Here is mimicry, documentation, myth fabrication, cultural voyeurism, performance, animation, political commentary, music, installation, craft and the cultivation of aesthetic delight. The irresolvable contradictions in this set of maneouvres keeps her own complicity visible as part of the circulation of meanings around her art.' - Mark Harris
