Inspired by the ‘Irish Disc: Unknown Function’ currently on display at the British Museum, the ‘Irish Disc: Cell’ reinterprets the Bronze Age disc for a retrofuturistic narrative and for San Mei’s theme ‘Chorus’, as an ambiguous audio prop.

Hazel is currently experimenting and remaking versions of the Irish Disc to examine British museum ownership of Irish artefacts and decolonization.

About the Artist

Hazel O’Sullivan is a multi-disciplinary artist working in sculpture and painting, examining discourse around cultural identity from an Irish perspective. She is currently researching archetypal representations of Ireland by visualising a combination of ancient and future narratives as retrofuturistic artefacts, devices and mythological architectures.

Hazel has most recently been selected for New Contemporaries 2024 and was awarded the Agility Award 2024 from the Irish Arts Council. Her solo shows include ‘RETROFUTURE’ at The Lab Gallery in Dublin and ‘Harvest Gold’ at The Solstice Arts Centre in Co. Meath, Ireland.

Hazel studied MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts (2023) in London.
