Julia Villamonte : Araw-araw
This hanging mobile is composed of different elements all made of plant fibers- while some were bought as industrial weaving materials from the Philippines, the hanging elements are all made of dandelion stems that the artist gathered during the spring of this year from parks, traffic islands and random patches of land all around Milan. Knowing the theme of this year’s fundraiser exhibition, Chorus, Villamonte is immediately reminded of her hanging mobiles- often made up of individual parts, assembled to form a single group.

About the Artist
My sculptures are soft intuitive forms made of usually uncolored woven natural fibers. Through the ancient art and craft of weaving, I explore the relationships of material, place and culture.
Often in forms of hanging mobiles, vessels and other domestic objects with or without function, I use plant fibers to communicate a sense of place. Growing up in a region with a crafting culture, I was exposed early on to objects made by hand using Abaca, Rattan, Nito and other species that grew locally. My fascination with the internal activities of a house, particularly, the objects that surround the inhabitants, was influenced by the early years of my architecture practice by working mainly on residential projects.
My process is realized through looping, tying, and interlacing multiple strands together to form a shape. Often with individual components, the unification of various elements form a larger piece.
