In the painting, ‘A man-fish in Milan’, Roma explores ideas of performance and character building. The painting presents a sting-ray’s carcass metamorphosing into an agonised creature – half man, half fish. The title is taken from an old Italian newspaper clipping, with an image of a stingray carcass. In this narrative, with references to 70’s Italian Giallo cinema, the man-fish becomes the protagonist with its prosthetic limbs and casual absurdity.

About the Artist

Carlotta Roma was born in Rome in 1996 and lives and works in London, UK. She received her BA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2019. Her paintings reach for the precipice, where the subject shifts between formation and decay. ‘Torschlusspanik’ is a German phrase that translates directly as ‘gate-shut-panic’. It is used to describe a fear of having opportunities closed on a person. In her work she uses this concept as a way to keep the painting’s surface open for as long as possible.

Layers of translucency are applied, built up in stages using different mediums to allow for both contemplative pauses and frenzied arrangements where forms can gradually appear in a disorienting and uneasy manner. Like an intuitive dance, the paintings are emotional, sometimes decisive and at other times totally chaotic.
