Patrick Stratton: Party 1: Tap Feet

A hand powered moving tapestry, when you turn the handle, the feet tap. The piece is part of a new series, depicting party scenes. My practice revolves around everyday repetitive actions and this series is focused on expanding this.

About the Artist

Patrick Stratton's work combines weaving with mechanics to document micro social systems. Using systematised observation, Patrick make pieces that try to highlight small human moments from a playful, existentialist viewpoint. Inspired by writers like Samuel Beckett, Patrick tries to do his best with what he has, reducing his experience in a time of overwhelming saturation.

Patrick does this through his recent series: “Things I do Sometimes”. He starts with listing in a scientific-like approach, moving left to right in a regularly occupied space, listing every action to do with an object; scroll through phone, charge phone, lock phone, forget password. He then pick an item, and convert it into a moving tapestry, often weaving it, then using motors to animate the piece.
