This piece, as with much of Harris-Mussi's work, explores how aerial imaging can uncover archaeological traces and scars of history preserved in the landscape, indicated by crop marks, shadow marks and other earthworks not visible from the ground. Using satellite imaging tools, she flies over landscapes screen grabbing fragments of topography, allowing the software to glitch and images to fracture and abstract. Harris-Mussi combines historical and contemporary imagery, blurring the line between past and present, fact and fiction. These processes decontextualize and abstract the source material, shifting the pictorial plane away from a knowable landscape towards a vague terrain that aims at re-framing our relationship to landscape. Each piece is made with hand cut wood veneers, a meticulous process that preserves and commits to memory our rapidly changing environment.

About the Artist

Rhian Harris-Mussi works with marquetry and sculpture to investigate how landscapes can function as archives encoded with collective cultural histories. Her work focusses on the aerial view and its role in revealing the varying forms of human intervention on the land, looking at how aerial technology has shaped our environment and how it can help to map and inform future ecologies.
Rhian recently participated in the residency programme and open air exhibition 'Sense of Earth' at Barbare Studio, Tekirdag (2024). Rhian’s recent solo and joint exhibitions include 'Flights' at SVA, Stroud (2023) and 'Beating the Bounds' at Inspection Pit, Petersfield (2023). Rhian has also exhibited in 'Pathways on Paper' at South Parade, London (2022); co-curated and exhibited in 'Vague Terrain' at SET Lewisham, London (2022) and 'A Fabricator’s Tale' at Guest Projects Digital (2021). Rhian is due to exhibit in 'Common Ground' at The Wilson, Cheltenham in 2025.
