Ellie MacGarry : Hold

This work stems from an ongoing series of works on paper ‘Hand Inside’, in which the artist has repeatedly depicted a torso and hand(s) engaging with one another. She has been exploring touch, intimacy and introspection in these works, which she has recently built upon, by depicting pairs or groups communing with one another.

About the Artist

I make paintings which consider connection, distance, gesture and touch. I use repeated motifs, most notably the hand, to explore the way we communicate with our bodies as much as we communicate with words. While paint will always fix an image in a moment, I am particularly drawn to transitory moments - a window letting the light in in the morning, a shirt half open, two hands on the cusp of meeting.
