Verity Birt: In Dark Derision
Verity Birt: In Dark Derision
In Dark Derision takes its title from Gaia’s lament in Hesiod’s Theogony c. 730 BC. Responding in part to the climate crisis, the work centres on my research on the mythological figure of Gaia and Gaia Theory which posits that everything is interconnected and synergistic. The collage draws together fragments of other works such as Hendrik Goltzius' 'The Dragon Devouring the Companions of Cadmus', 1588; Ludwig Michalek's 'The Oracle's Cave at Delphi', 1911; Lynn Margulis, still from archival footage, 1989; James Lovelock and Will Wright, SimEarth (Daisyworld) Gaia Simulation Video Game, 1990 & my dream journal iPhone screenshots, 2020.
